Lost Atlas

What kinds of maps are Dungeon Masters searching for?

At the beginning of last month, I added anonymized search logging to Lost Atlas. Personally, I know what kind of maps I’m looking for—for my last session I needed an ankheg hive, a cockatrice lair, and some sort of rock outcropping–but what about other DMs?

Now that we’re done with November, I can share a months’ worth of data. Note that this reporting is in a pretty early stage and will need some refinement to fix some accuracy issues. I had to do some data cleanup but by now I think these numbers are roughly correct.

First, here are the most popular search terms in November:

QueryQueries per 1000
city20.25
forest17.46
snow16.06
cave13.97
swamp13.27
jungle12.57
ship12.57
desert12.57
temple11.87
tavern11.17
dungeon11.17
camp8.38
crypt7.68
town7.68
tower6.98
library6.28
village6.28
mountain5.59
river5.59

Queries per 1000 just means how many times that specific search was entered per thousand queries. As you can imagine, people search for all kinds of stuff, but for now I’m just presenting the most popular ones.

It occurred to me as well that I can compare this to the maps I have indexed. That way, I can see which searches are likely to be satisfied by the maps I have indexed, and which searches might need some more help.

Here are the above search terms, sorted by the likelihood that they need more maps:

This adds two new columns: Matching maps is how many indexed maps match that query. Matching maps per queries is just the result of dividing Queries per 1000 by Matching maps.

Sorting by Matching maps per queries, we see some interesting trends:

What do you think? Notice anything surprising? And is there any other reporting you’d like to see next month? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. That is really interesting – thanks for publishing it! There was a survey by Elderbrain a while ago asking people about what terrains they preferred, I must check to see how those preferences compare to what you have here.
